Surprising Places Where Illness Causing Germs Lurk

Norovirus and other germs aren't fussy where they hide.  Because I'm extremely obsessed with preventing the spread of norovirus, or any other illness that can make me vomit, I decided to add another post on surprise places these germs are hiding.

Vacuum Cleaners.  Researchers at the University of Arizona found that 50% of the vacuum cleaners they tested contained fecal bacteria, e-coli, and mold.  Vacuums spread germs from one room to another.  To prevent contamination, spray a disinfectant on the brushes after every use.  If you're shopping for a new vacuum cleaner, consider a bagless one since they prevent the spread of germs better than the ones with disposable bags.

Grocery carts and baskets.  Most stores have sanitizer dispensers right by the carts.  Use them!  The University of Arizona study found that almost two thirds of the handles on shopping carts tested had fecal bacteria.  That's more than the average bathroom.

Restaurant Menu's and the salt and pepper shakers on the table.  Cold and flu viruses can last up to 18 hours on hard surfaces.  In a busy restaurant, hundreds of people touched that same menu during that time period.  Never let the menu touch the plate or silverware and wash your hands after placing your order or use a hand sanitizer.  The same goes for salt and pepper shakers.

Lemon wedges in drinks.    In a 2007 study from the Journal of Environmental Health, nearly 70 percent of the lemon wedges in restaurant glasses contained disease-causing microbes.  Enough said!

Oh my gosh. I can't believe that a a vacuum cleaner had so much bacteria. I would have never thought of that. And grocery carts... I can't believe it contained more fecal matter. Gross. I am going to make sure I clean the cart handles next time I go. Once again, wonderful post!

I just found your blog and all I have to say is thank god for you! I'm only 19 but I have been suffering with emetophobia for a long long time! I am the girl you will NEVER see touching her face or putting my hands anywhere near my mouth! I would rather die then touch food before I wash my hands! Like you, mine seems to come and go but it is full force in the colder months and summer seems to be a little better. I recently moved to Florida and believe it or not it helps being in a warmer climate. Last winter there were VERY few days when I left my house or even got out of bed. Last winter was hell because BOTH of my parents came down with the stomach virus! I stayed in my room with the window open and when I did come downstairs EVERYTHING got bleached and washed. Luckily, I dodged a bullet that time! Best of luck, I know how hard this time of year is! Good thing we are almost to Spring. (Thank god for that!)

The thought of 'Novo' - I can't even type the whole name - makes my skin crawl and my stomach gurgle. I can't wait for the spring and flu season to be over!!!
